The reverse on both M40 and M41 is on the small aluminum bit you mention. It's over on the side on the M41, and near the middle on the M40.

In looking over the diagram at Vclassics, it appears that there should *only* be one wire running to the 4th gear switch and then to the OD solenoid. There are two wires in the M41 harness. So I'm led to conclude that the second wire goes to the reverse light and the spade connector that is on the M41 reverse light switch.

I might just be mis-feeling the connector and assuming that the same wire continues on to the solenoid.

It's the simplest explanation, fits the facts and the wiring diagram. I really won't know for sure until I hook it all up and get it into overdrive.
