Rear end knocking noise 240 200 1989

Hello all,

The problem I'm trying to trace seems to be from the rear end of the car. There is a knocking sound, related to road speed that is only apparent when I back off the throttle and coast. It came on quite quickly, about 50 miles, from first being aware of a slight knocking to not daring to exceed 40 mph for fear of something horrific happening.

I've pulled the axle shafts out. Bearings and seals are fine. The drive shaft is disconnected from the pinion flange on the diff. Universal joints seem OK. Pinion shaft seems firm and rotates smoothly, but the seal definitely needs replacing. I've drained the oil from the diff, and it contained no nasty surprises. All control rods to the rear axle seem OK, although bushes obviously starting to show their age.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.
