Volvo Oil Temperature Gauge (Fahrenheit) Problems 200 1986

I recently installed a Volvo Oil Temperature Gauge in my 1986 240DL. The gauge reads a maximum oil temperature of 160 degrees F regardless of how long the car is running. I followed the Volvo instructions for installation and all wiring appears to be correct. I checked the voltage reading at the sensor (oil drain plug) and reads approximately 6 volts. I suspect the oil does get hotter than 160 degrees (gauge readout ranges from 140 to 300 degrees F). Any suggestions regarding the low reading. The gauge and sender appear to be in excellent condition. Thanks.
