noisy intank fuel pump 200

I have just had the intank pre-pump replaced in my '89 240 by my independant Volvo mechanic as the old one was failing. The problem is that the new one is much noisier than the old one. You can hear it running over the sound of the engine. It is a Volvo part. Mechanic insists this is normal as it is a high flow pump. I'm unhappy about the annoying noise and find it hard to believe that a new pump would be so loud. Has anyone experienced this with new intank prepumps? Is there something else that might contribute to the noise (besides the part being faulty)?
