Backup Lights Not working 900 1992

i am noticing that my rear back up lights aren't working unless i stick my finger down into the gear housing and push the plastic lever upwards to make the connection. is this a common problem that can be fixed or does the whole shifter module need to be replaced? any cheap fixes? any imput would be appreciated.
