Non retractable antenna on 1990 740 gle???? 700

Hi All,
Years ago I bent the retractable antenna on my wagon. The metal shaft was cracked/broke at the base and I was able to pull the antenna out with the white nylon cord. I've left it in the socket. Recently however, I am getting worse reception. I've read the faqs on replacing the antenna and am wondering if I can just replcae it with an after market, non retractable antenna that is either short or is on a bendable coil? I'm just not sure I want to delve into replacing the existing one with another of the same type. My questions are as follow:

1) Is there a non retractable antenna I can use on this car

2) How does the antenna get a signal? There doesn't seem to be any wire attached to it. Is the signal sent through the metal casing of the antenna itself?

Thanks so much for any thoughts.

Vance
