radiator & thermostat replacement questions 700 1990

Dear all,

a dealership tech checked my '90 740 Turbo wagon (Auto) car and told that the radiator developed some tiny wet build-ups and about to start cracks. Also, he says the thermostat is stuck in the open position which means that engine does not heat up properly at the initial stage, and that might be a reason for my car's low 15 MPG value. Does it sound realistic?

I am going to visit my friend and we will work on the cooling system at his place and need an advise of what to buy in advance (I have the option to return it if there will be no need). My list would be (based on reading FAQ):

-radiator
-thermostat
-hoses: upper, lower, and to the reservoir
-water valve
-coolant & distilled water to prepare 2.5 gals of antifreeze
-some ATF which might be spilled when disconnecting the lines from the radiator..
...what else?...

Any suggestions on the list and replacemnet procedure are welcome.
Thanks in advance,

Wolandir
