RPM or Knock Sensor?? 700

Hey all,
Daughter's 1990 740 Turbo is giving us fits. It will run for weeks just fine, then suddenly for a few days while driving along, just cut out and "tremble". You try to feather the gas and getting going but it won't, so a quick on the fly shut off and restart, it will kick right back in and run great. Never any problems starting it.
But now what it's doing is, after the moving restart, it cuts back out again after a couple miles and does the same thing, over and over. She barely got the car home the other day and suffice it to say, it's dangerous at stop lights or pulling out in an intersection. It will idle fine, but once you give it gas, it won't go, just sputters for awhile before kicking in or making you so frustrated you do the quick restart.
Btw, I've replaced various relays..the radio thing, fuel one, and so forth. So I'm thinking its either the RPM sensor or the knock sensor.
Any thoughts?
