What later model would you buy?

Going on a little bit of a posting frenzy since I haven't been here in a long time.

My '91 740 is still running very well and I'm generally happy with it. It's gotten a fair share of knocks though. Cosmetically it's looking pretty rough - paint is dull/swirled, and I've done a good deal of bad bondo work on it.

I'm starting to try and think of what I want to get to replace this. I live in a fairly urban area so I do tend to walk quite a bit, and I work at home. My wife sometimes has part-time work and I drive into NYC once a week. I make a few 1000+ mile trips a year, and once a month or so go to Philly for another job.

I don't think I'm a good candidate for a new car. I've been very happy with the overall quality of the 740, but I don't want to buy another car that old. And I don't want to buy a Ford Volvo.

I'm vaguely thinking a mid-late '90's 850 might be my car... Slightly smaller, old enough to be affordable, and hopefully slightly better mileage and performance than my 740.

What do you all think?
