Found a completely reconditioned head at the local shop 700 1990

The shop manager had a no-return customer. The head was completly reconditioned.
Got a really good deal on it. Anyway, I need to remove my upper (camshaft) timing sprocket off the old (warped) head and put it on the newly reconditioned head. Is the bolt holding this sprocket a left hand thread? Also, I cleaned the block deck with a paint scraper made for removing paint off windows. It is pretty clean but still has sort of a varnished appearance. Does the deck need to be clean and clear metal? If so how do I remove the varnish without damaging the surface?

Thanks,
-Tony
