hesitation under acceleration

As always, in the trusty old 242GT ('79) and other 240s trouble of this nature screams in-tank pump!
1) pull pump, sub in >84.5 version. Much improved, still, below half tank she starts to stutter again
2) pull pump, might have missed a small crack in a hose or left a clamp loose? Stutter returns
3) pull pump, install spare < 84.5 as per spec. Stutter
4) pull pump, in goes brand new FCP pump. Bad stutter. Remind self to check pump before install, this one has an impeller that hangs up on the case
5) pull pump, try another spare old <84.5 pump. Very nice, then stutter once per mile or two
6) pull pump, install 2nd FCP pump that Nick sent. Perfect running, sublime again. Wait, WTF no gas gauge. Loose float in tank
7) pull pump, replace float. The afternoon project.

I have repaired these for years with a one shot effort, this time everything is going wrong. But the end is in sight.
