Yes, I am an idiot. What the heck did I drill? (Water Pump 91 240) 200

I broke a bolt on the water pump. Thought I was drilling the right hole, and broke an extractor off. Just got under the car and saw I was drilling a hole just below the mount bolt hole - that is inside the gasket area of the pump.

Here are my questions:

- What the heck is this hole for?

- I drilled through it, thinking it was the broken bolt, using a 7/64 bit from Lowe's. The bit went through quickly and hit air, I think. IS THIS OKAY?

- Should the hole be open, or plugged?

The good news is I just got the bolt out. No need to tap or anything. Now I am worried I drilled into something bad in the block. Surely you can't get through cast iron that easily with a cheap hand drill and bit from Lowe's.

Thanks for the help folks!
