high pitched humming from behind the glove compartment

I have a 1987 Volvo 740 and I have just noticed a strange noise coming from behind the glove compartment during braking. I have removed all of the contents of the glove compartment to see if that changed anything and i held the plastic frame of the compartment while braking, the sound continued. The sound seems to be behind the compartment itself. Could somebody give me an idea of what this could possibly be?
