Odd-ball rear defroster operation 92 245 200 1992

This one just started today. Started the car this morning to defrost before leaving for work, yes, maxed out the heat and turned on the rear defroster. Between idling for 10 minutes and a twenty minute commute, when I got to work, the rear defroster was still on (usually turns off after about five minutes). Please note, the rear window did defrost normally.

On the way home this evening, I started the car, no problem, turned on the headlights and the rear defroster turned on without touching the button.

Later, the rear defroster turned off, until I put the car in reverse, then the rear defroster turned back on.

I have two thoughts on this one for a possible cause:
1: Failing rear defrost timer/relay.
2: Bad tail gate wiring harness... grounds are snapped but everything in the hatch works fine, including the wiper, and all lights.

I'm leaning towards #2, thoughts?

Thanks in advance!
