87 240 Sedan Clunking Engine noise..Hmmm 200 1987

So, this just started a couple weeks ago, but it has me spooked. Quit driving this little honey until I get it sorted. When at idle, there is a softly clunking noise which comes from the front of the engine..Keeps time with the fanbelt, approximately. Opened up the timing cover & checked the belt-looks okay all the way around, so no shreds beating on the insode of the cover. What could this BE??? Smog Pump? This car has AC as well..Which still works! Whaddya think?? Thanks for any response! Mike
