Sounds like the key is in the door lock? If you can't get into the car with a coathanger or something similiar it sounds like a call to the locksmith. They deal with this kind of thing on a daily basis. He should be able to extract the broken piece without too much trouble.

If you are able to get into the car you can then remove the door panel and have access to release the tumbler assembly. You can then save yourself a ton of money by carrying the tumbler and key piece to a locksmith.
