engine vibration at 3000rpm 900 1993

My 1993 945T with 91K on it has a pretty substantial vibration between 2500-3000rpm. This happens in any gear, and is worse under load. The severity seems also to be influenced by the octane of gas, so now I use only 93 - but it is still quite bad. I have cleaned the throttle body and replaced cap, rotor, and wires. I also replaced the transmission mount. The car has pretty good power, and idles smoothly - although at about 950rpm. I can't get the idle down to ~700rpm even after cleaning throttle body and the idle control valve, adjusting the idle control switch, and replacing most of the vacuum lines. The car stalls if I block the flow of air through the idle control valve - so I don't suspect a vacuum leak. I did notice a bit of play in the distributor, but am not sure how much is OK. I would appreciate any advice.
