freeze plug 200

This morning while driving to work ( midnight ), I noticed my temp gauge was almost red. I open the hood and noticed all my coolant was gone. I put my drinking water in the coolant tank and temp gauge went back down to middle. I found out the leaking come from between the engine and the tranny. Is there a freeze plug there? How many? How often do you have to change that? I just bought this car a few months ago, it's a 85GL with 54,000 original miles on it. Thanks...
