Heated seat switch Q's... 700

The drivers side heated seat doesn't work in my 760GLE. I thought that I could check the switch by pulling the center console and swapping the dirver's and passenger's sides, but they aren't interchangable. They look the same except for a tab to keep them in the correct slot. Can I just remove this tab and install it? or are they different inside as well?
I have a meter, but haven't put that to the connectors yet. What are the 3 plugs for and is there an easy way to diagnose if the switch is the problem? I have read that a bad bulb can short this out. and finally, which wire is which coming into the connector, as I'm not scared of have the heater run constantly until spring...

Thanks guys
