New 960 Owner - Motor mount question 900

Hello all, I've always been a Toyota guy but would like to get into Volvos.

There's a '95 960 in my town with what the guy describes as bad motor mounts. Apparently they are so bad that he can no longer get the car into gear. My question for the gurus out there is, if motor mounts are left unchecked and completely destroy themselves, what else can be damaged? He also says the engine started making a knocking sound. As I understand it, the filter is right next to the firewall and might have been damaged by the sagging mounts, causing loss of oil pressure.

I'm no stranger to a wrench, but I'm wondering if the tranny might have suffered internal damage or if a sagging engine can simply bind up a linkage from the shifter to the tranny.
Thanks a lot for any info
