Strange noise from transmission 900

I have a '95 940 turbo wagon that has started to make a strange noise. When decelerating, a whining noise comes from the transmission, I believe. It sounds sort of like a turbo with bad bearings spooling down, but the noise is not related to engine speed at all. So I'm guessing that the tranny is the source. I have limited knowledge of transmissions so I'm asking for any input here. I did check the level of trans. fluid and it was very dirty but at the correct level.
Any ideas on what the noise could be?

Thanks!
