Hello all,
1988 765 turbo with 213K recently developed a no start condition. Haven't had this problem for a couple of years when I had a overly rich condition which washed the walls of the cylinders and caused engine to loose compression. A little oil in each cylinder and it fired right up. I corrected the rich condition and it's been starting great since then until a couple of weeks ago. I drove the vehicle about 15 miles, parked it for 4 hours, and cranked it. It started, but stalled 2 seconds later with no start after many attempts. Checked the oil, it was a quart low (I know, bad me). So I squirted some oil into the cylinders thinking it may have been a low compression situation again due to dry cylinder walls. Still no start. Waited a couple of days and called AAA to tow to my home to further diagnose. AAA jumped the battery and it started right up. Drove it the 15 miles home without incident. Car sat for a week until today. Guess what?! - no start again. Again, it appeared to start right away, but stalled after a second or two. Has fuel and spark. Catalytic converter recently replaced. Distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, and wires have all been replaced within the last couple of years (5k miles or so, I don't drive much).
Anyone out there had a similar problem? Would a weak spark produce symptoms like this (can coil have intermitent issues)? I suspect the power stage module after reading the FAQ, but is there a way to test this unit? I haven't been able to locate any info in the FAQ or in Haynes to check for proper function? I'd hate to throw parts (and $$) at this problem without first testing likely components.
Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated!!
