caliper retaining clips

i am doing a front brake pad replacement job on my 92 240 and after closer inspection realize that the caliper pins have holes but not on the end (where the pin sticks out) but actually inside next to the anti-rattle clips. One side of the car has a wire tied thru them but the other had nothing? How critical is it to replace the wire that would hold the caliper pins from moving? I never saw pins such as these on my other volvos when doing the brakes just the usual narrowed neck of the pin on the outside so a retaining clip snaps over them. I bought the brake hardware kit but again it came w/ the same type clip that i don't think i can use. Please advise. Thank you
