740 steering noise - rack problem? 700 1992

With the cold weather, I've noticed an intermittent groaning noise (kind of a "grroonnnnnkkk") that occurs when the I'm parking the 740 - usually somewhere between 1/3 and 2/3 of travel, mostly on the left side. The guy who works on the car said it may be related to the rack having a valve that can cause this, but that it's NOT a concern. I'm planning some long trips this winter, so would like to bounce this here. By the way, I'm pretty sure it's NOT the PS pump, so it probably does have something to do with the rack. Any ideas? Should I worry?
