Anyone replaced/rebuilt tailgate lamp switch? 900

Mine hasn't worked in a couple of years, so I thought I'd either rebuild or replace it. Problem is, when I unscrewed the Torx fastening/ground screw, I couldn't easily pull out the switch (it's in a recess in the door surround.)

Like a real genius, I probed in with a pair of needlenose pliers and pulled. Well, it popped out, all right...right out of its spade connectors! These can now only be seen through the hole in the door surround.

Anyone played with this before? What I need to know for a fact is whether these wires have any appreciate free length. Hard to believe there's no workable length...that would mean the switch is never to be serviced. If there is slack, why didn't the connectors come forward when the switch was pulled? I guess I will need some sort of exotic, really long needlenose pliers to extract them, but I do not want to take this step until I can confirm the wire is there to pull!

A last question would be, why would Volvo spec metal spade connectors highly prone to oxidation in a location like this! (Never mind that question!) Should I be trying to remove interior trim to get to this?
