I just purchased a 97 960 with 74K in excellent condition. I went thru the extensive postings on the Alum engine (thanks for taking the time) and learned about the anticipated high maintenance. I do take good care and stay in close tune with all organs of my volvos. The car was under warranty until July of this year and it seems like all regularly scheduled work was done by the volvo dealer.
First, the dealer replaced the timing belt in 2002 at 53K. Given that it is up for replacement at 123K, should I worry about the age of the belt, being 4 years old at this time?
Second, I have the habit of regularly replacing the transmission fluid in the pan (2-3 qts) every time I change motor oil. According to the owner's manual, the fluid in the 960 is good for life, which I like to believe but it has been disputed in some of the postings I read. The tranny is fine. However, I am tempted by the easily accessed plug and feel like rejuvenating the 10-year old fluid with few quarts of fresh fluid is a good idea. Or I may be should leave it alone at this time?
Third, the manual suggest changing oil 5-10k. But do oils and filters (premium quality) really maintain their properties and protect this high maintenance engine for that long?
Lastly, what is a reasonable gas milage baseline for this engine? I got only 22mpg highway.
