violent refrigerant leak 200 1993

The air conditioning on my '93 245 (R-134A) has worked generally well until this past weekend. I noticed the compresor had been cycling a lot, so I decided to add some refrigerant. That afternoon the unit put out air hotter than the ambient temperature. The next day I took a closer look and found that when the compressor kicked on a small charge of refrigerant was shot across the engine bay and hit the firewall! It was not obvious where the refrigerant came from...I suppose it could be a split hose or a a loose connection. Anyone else seen this?

thanks,
Eric
