Auto Tranny issues on 1983 GL 200 1983

We have a 1983 GL with an automatic transmission. We've had a series of issues. First, it would downshift unexpectedly at highway speeds. On the board here, people theorized it was a faulty or worn kick down cable. They were right, it got a band aid instead of replaced, and for a thousand miles or so all was well. Then, it wouldn't shift into OD at all. We've just had the solenoid for the tranny replaced; now it shifts into OD. But since getting it back today, it now up-shifts at too high an engine speed. Is this something that the incompetent can adjust themselves? Is it indicative of anything simple like we need new AT fluid?
