Volvo 940 tape deck stopped working 900 1991

A few weeks ago my 940's tape player, a Volvo CR-728, chewed up one of my tapes.
Now it doesn't play tapes at all. The drive motor is working but the tape itself doesn't move and the magnetic head doesn't move up to touch the tape. Also the forward and rewind buttons don't stay in when pressed like they did before. Does anyone know what might be broken? I took the unit out and checked for a broken drive belt but it was fine. I realise the simple solution is to replace it but Volvo head units are expensive in Australia even secondhand. Also, the available aftermarket CD players look horribly out of place in the dash and I like to keep things looking original. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks
Brad
