Erratic drops in acceleration 200 1986

Hi, although I am a regular reader of this site, this is my first post. Also, I don't know much about car repairs (and, hence, that's why I read this site) so please excuse me in advance for not knowing the proper terminology for the problem I am about to describe.

My 1986 Volvo 240 wagon has been experiencing a strange drop in acceleration. It's an intermittent problem and, for some strange reason, it happens about once a week at about exactly the same spot on the road (about .5 - .75 miles away from my house).

When the problem occurs, the car experiences a sudden drop in power and won't accelerate past about say 10-15mph. If I hit the gas pedal, the engine will rev and struggle a bit, suddenly jump up (the tachometer(?) jumps from 2 to 2.5), and then jump back down, and then the car will go back to normal.

The first time this problem occurred, I put in a brand new fuel relay (after reading the advice on this board). Now I'm not sure what to do next. Indeed, I'm not sure it's the same problem (the first time this happened, hitting the gas pedal all the way down did absolutely nothing -- the car had a mind of its own and just decided to go back to normal acceleration when it felt like it).

Any suggestions? I'm also particularly concerned b/c I was planning on driving the car about 200 miles tomorrow to visit relatives for Christmas.
