Vacuum retard distributor......Why? 140-160

Someone must have asked this before:
I have the vacuum retard distributor on my 1970 145s.
About the only reason I can think of to retard the timing is when the throttle is first snapped open and your excelerating. Like butterflies open, but lower engine RPMs (I could be wrong here)
If thats the case, where does its vacuum line plug into. All the sources I can find are on the manifold.

Can the distro be converted to vacuum advance by just swapping out the diaphram (which appears to have a slight leak anyhow)

Thanks,
Dave.
