940 suddenly starts bucking/lurching; little power 900 1994

The car has been driving beautifully for years, with regular maintenance. I last drove it about 3 days ago. Today it started just fine and I drove without incident about 3 miles to the store. Outside temp is about +40F. The car sat for maybe 15 minutes. I go to start it and it turns over just fine, but immediately dies. Another attempt and same thing. On the 3rd try it stays running but only if I really work the accelerator. I get it on the road and the motor is bucking and kicking, and I can not get it to move with any great urgency. Like a really bad case of hesitation. It was an anxious ride home getting through 3 major intersections, but it made it.

So where to look first? Does this sound like bad gas? The tank is 1/2 full. It's due for a fuel filter change, but that shouldn't cause a sudden performance failure, should it?

thanks for all constructive thoughts.
