Installing lock motor in driver's door 200 1987

I have been struggling with fitting a lock motor without success and now I could need some help. Installing the motor itself is straightforward as the mounting holes are already there, the problem is the connecting rod.

I have saved all the rods, motors and wiring harness from a junker, so I have a variety of rods to try. And I thought one of them was a direct fit - see picture below. But, it will only fit if the lock knob is UP and the motor is DOWN, so it is about an inch too long.

Do I have to bend the rod to fit? Or have I missed something?
