Charging system or battery issue? 200 1989

Hi got some problems with my wagon and not sure where to start,it started with the cluster lights starting to fade and the other idiot lights starting to regester a little they were not on all the way kinda of dim and then the dash lights and head lights went dim also,had to get a jump start to get going again and finally made it home,after actually having to take the car out of gear at stop lights and keep reving the motor and at the last moment turnig off the lights in order to keep the car going to make it home the last 2 blocks,talk about a nail biter! just wondering is it the alternator or battery? or some thing else any info will help.
