volvo1800/164/dana 30-volvo tubo/jeep dana 44 information?

I need information about Volvo rear ends. My '72 1800e currently has a dana 30 rear axle from a '74 164 w/ 3.31:1 gear ratio. These have had the flanges and the lug holes welded up and redrilled to a 5x4 1/2" bolt pattern to bolt 15x12" Weld Draglite racing wheels. The lugs wound up 1/10" out of round.

I am now trying to find a SIMPLE fix. It appears that new replacement axle shafts that could be drilled for this bolt pattern do not exist and I can't remember why the Volvo shafts had to be drilled in the exact same location as the 5x4 1/4" lugs. I was hoping that maybe a Jeep Dana 30 axle shaft might be the right length or that I could have them cut down to fit the 164's houseing(too many jeep variation and little data).

Doing an internet search for Dana rear ends showed a thread from the Turbobrick site that certain Volvo's came with a Dana 44 rear axle. Jeeps came with various width 44's, some being 50.5" and 54.5" wide outside of flange to outside of flange with centered differentials.

Does anybody know what the outside flange dimensions are for an 1800, 164, and turbo rear are?

I want to change the gear ratio from the 3.31 but don't know if I want a 3.54 or a 3.73 for the stock b30 engine, but I do underderstand that I need a different houseing for the 3.73. I have had 4.30's (too low) and the 3.31's(too tall), what's just right, the 3.73's?

I have been looking for a replacement spindle to fix the same problem with my front hubs. Looking in the junk yards I have figured out that Dodge car spindles seem to be the same as Volvo 164's spindles; 7 1/2" tall with 7 1/2 degree king pin inclination w/ 5x4 1/2" lugs and have found a company that sells new spindles with Wilwood aluminum hubs and brakes. New ball joint races can be welded into the Volvo control arms. I am awaiting a reply to confirm the dimensions (They might not reply since I used the word Volvo in my inquiry}.

I don't know, but early Camero or Nova spindles might also work and come in a dropped spindle which would really help my too low front suspension although I have been e-mailed pictures of a notched crossmember for a 122 that after being raised into the frame, will result in a lowered car. I don't understand how the steering gear is affected, raised up also?

Still confused, James
