Two key words- rusted, and So Cal. Ok, three words, but, in damper locations, locations with salt, you are going to run into a LOT of the single piece of metal stuff. In fact, I have found the front to be far easier to deal with in that regard.

Naturally people have all sort of different methods to extract, but blow torch is fairly common in these parts without a press, due to the rust factor. Then you smack them with the chissels, etc.
