If your alternator is a Bosch, then a replacement brush set/ regulator can be had for less than $20 and if you can access the back of the alternator, you can replace them in 2 mins. Probably you will have to remove it to gain access.
Sometimes the slip rings have a groove worn in them but worry not, the replacement brushes will work anyway.
