To start off the New Year, I spent this morning in my 90 740Ti disassembling the shifter cover. (please pardon the lack of technical term).
I've had a persistent no-start that's gotten progressively worse over the last 3 weeks.
Initially, I would turn the key once and not get a response at all, as though the car was not in Park or Neutral. No crank, no spark, nothing. This worsened to where I can turn the key ten times and nothing happens.
This morning, I came out of my girlfriend's house and had no start at all. I disassembled the cover and the neutral safety switch cover, disconnected the NSS and shorted the contacts that correspond to park. The car started immediately and I threw a little party.
When I stopped at Burger King to eat breakfast and tried it again, I thought I had confused the right contacts and eventually it started.
The starts are quick and the car runs well with plenty of power.
When I stopped at Car Quest, I realized the Neutral Safety Switch is not the problem because no matter what I shorted, even after cleaning the contacts with a file, I got nothing. I don't think my shorting the NSS did anything to help the car start, only that it definitely wouldn't start with it not connected.
When I finally got home, I disassembled the actual switch, removed the grease and the buildup from the plastic on the metal contacts and confirmed it's not the NSS.
So the other two things I suspect are:
1) The ignition switch
2) The Bosch Ignition Amplifier (I think) mounted on the driver's side wall forward of the fender.
3) The ECU
I suspect 1 because I can turn on some things (like the windows) without being fully into run (the lights, fuel pump, etc stay off). I suspect 2 because I know it's a wear item. The starts don't seem to be hard when it's hot only, so maybe there's something else I'm missing.
3- because it's the only other thing I can think of that would cause a total no-start. Also I suspect it has problems because the fuel pump doesn't cycle, just stays on in KP2.
Things I checked:
I hear the fuel pump relay clicking and the pumps running. I recently examined and re-soldered one joint on the RSR. Also, because the car runs, I don't suspect anything not involved in starting only besides the Ignition Amplifier.
Edit: I just read the FAQ pages on no-starts and the ignition amplifier doesn't seem to be plausible as the cause. I think it must be the ignition module or something I haven't even guessed at like the ECU. This is half-price weekend at Pick and Pull...
I'd appreciate any help,
Will
