240 Engine Revs

Hi,
I am having some strange experiences with my '89 240gl engine. Sometimes when i start it and drive it the idle rev's will be extremely low (just above that bar for the minimum required revs) and sometimes it will be alittle above normal (just below 1000). I am not sure what to do as i guess adjusting the revs would be no good as if i do that then in one case it would be too high or low again.

What could be the problem/solution?

Regards,
Dave.
