Heater control valve questions 200

Hi:

I've had an issue over the past 8 years or so with my heater control valve. Being in Texas, I only use the heater 8-10 times a year (max!). When I do use it, it is freeze or roast! If I place the selector in the middle, it works okay, but then there is a slight whistle sound. If I tap the lever a little, it will go away.

My question is... Is this a simple R&R on a 1990 model, or is it a PITA? I could live with it the way it is, BUT, this month I am doing a ton of work on the car and I wouldn't mind switching it out if all I have to do is pull the plastic on the drivers side of the center console,and disconnect a few heater hoses...

Finally, is the IPD replacement the best way to go? (Quality part, no do-overs becasue of cheap parts...)?

Thanks for your insight.

John

If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 245K looking forward to 300K badge. >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}
