Hi all,
I am new here, I just (as in this morning) come across a problem, I was hoping for sme input.
I have a 66 122s auto. It has been converted to an alternator (AC Delco) who knows when. I have only had this vehicle for two months (i love it). It has been very reliable until this morning.
Last week it started making a lot of noise. Upon inspection I discovered the noise was coming from the alternator. It was installed crooked and had busted (3) of the (4) bolts that held the unit together. I tried to extract & replace the broken bolts (failed). So I spent the $48 on a new alternator. Friday, I hooked it up exactly as the previous one, except I put it on straight. I got a new belt too. Everything seemed to be working fine until this morning.
About half-way to work the lights started going dim an I could tell it was losing power. It was sorta light so I turned off everything, wipers, heater, lights, and made it to work. Of course it now will not start.
Here is my questions....What is going on? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I am a novice car guy.
A side note, one peculiar thing about the installation on the alternator was the black & red wires controlling the amp light (at dash) were not connected. I tried connecting them but They did nothing so I disconnected them. I figured it was working in this condition before so why mess with it.
