Are you going to 0.020" overbore? Does the $1100 include new pistons?
I'd guess that the lower end complete is probably OK unless seriously
abused. You can get it plastigaged to determine that.
I'm with Phil about valves and springs.
If the lifters are bad chances are the cam is also.
If you have to replace the cam, get a "D" or "K" grind.
They are quite driveable and give more power.
