I picked up my second 240 tonight for $500. It runs nice, drives well (but for some gasping when I turn the wheel too quickly), and feels good overall.
The existing 240, Ethan, is a 1987 wagon. The new one is a 1989 sedan. Both are automatic.
Ethan has some really bad rust, leaks through above the windshield, needs new belts, shifts a little rough when he's cold, has really rough locks all around, lacks a handle on the back seat (so it can't be folded down), has a rear turn-signal with a good bulb that still doesn't work, and could use quite a bit of work in plenty of other areas as well.
The new one has a bent hood (from being closed .. somehow wrong ... not from an accident), and needs repainted, but otherwise seems in great shape. So I bought it. On the way home, the plastic dam between the front wheels (skid plate?) dropped down and rubbed along the highway. I pulled off and put it back up in the loose clips, and got the rest of the way home (with it only falling two more times) and everything else seemed fine. Oh, but then the rear bumper was hanging half off when I came around to walk into the house.
In addition to that, I have a 95 VW Cabrio (VW being my first true love) that needs far more work than I have the time or skill or funds to give it.
And while we're on the subject of my skill level, you should know that it's woefully lacking. I have a haynes, and I understand the pictures, but when it comes to taking things apart and putting them back together properly, I'm best left out of it. If it's plastic or rusted, I will break it. If it's not, I will break myself on it. That said, I did manage to fix the wipers and the control head (climate control knobs) on a 95 Golf I once had. I also fixed the wiper motor after I broke it while fixing the wipers. Quite understandably, it should be noted that I lack such helpful tools as a floor jack, lift, engine thing, and a lot of the other stuff that can't be called "hammer", "screwdriver", "wrench", or "pliers".
I think that about covers my predicament. I welcome any advice, sympathy, motivation or mockery that you have to offer.
