That Micro Switch that will not let me shift out of park S90-V90 1998

Hi, I may be really thick as I am trying to understand this Gear Lever business. I had to move the 960 the other day as it was too close to the garage door for me to open it ,so I just unlocked the 960 pulled it out of gear and then just pushed it back to clear the garage door ,then realized no ignition key in the lock to allow me to disengage from PARK.(I had just been reading all this. So I deliberately did all the combinations of ign. key, brake pedal,in & out of gear to see what happens? Nothing happened it`s just like a manual car, you do what you like with the gear lever in any position. The only safety measure is it will only start up in PARK or NEUTRAL. Is this just a safety feature for the US market? I bought my 960 from a Volvo dealer and it was only owned by them so it would have had no messing with. Open to all explanations!!! Best Regards
