Hard to start after running and sitting a while question:AMM/crank sensor 700 1992

After driving 15 miles to work and setting for 8 hours my car is very hard to start. Once it turns over it runs like a top, no missing or difficulty re-starting on the first turn of the key. It only happens after it sits up or when it is very damp outside. Yesterday after cranking for a min or so, i removed the air cleaner at the joint where it joins the AMM. It cranked on the first try after that. My air cleaner is not stopped up, filter clean, tuneup kit/timing belt etc. done <5k ago. I did notice the AMM sensor had a lot of gunk in the holes, so I went to the parts store and got some AMM cleaner and cleaned it up with the spray. My question is, could a gummed up AMM make it hard to start? The guy at O reilly's I bought the cleaner from said if cleaning the AMM didn't help it might be the Crank Sensor? I know that a bad AMM will lead to poor running engine, but could a dirty one lead to a difficult starting symptom. Also could what I described be the symptoms of a bad crank sensor? Thoughts? thanks!
