Bigger Alternator? 140-160

I had the same sort of experience many years ago in our 72 144 - running at night with headlights, heater blower, stereo, etc all running. There was NO amp light on, but when we stopped and shut the engine off, it wouldn't start again. We push started the car and were able to continue driving if we turned everything off except the parking lights. Any more demand on the electrical system and the fuel pump would start to crap out.

As it turned out, snugging up a loose alternator belt cured the problem. Apparently the alternator was turning fast enough to extinguish the idiot light, but not fast enough to support all the accessaries.

OK, moral of the story - check the belt tension.
