Electrical issues 200 1984

The lock/unlock relays themselves rarely cause problems - try other things before going there. The relays are triggered by a ground pulse from the switches - driver door key and push button. The relays then send power to either one or the other of two wires (a Yellow and a Blue) going to each door's lock solenoid...causing the lock or unlock.

Intermittent and repeated self-operation of the relays has to be happening because a signal wire from the switches is grounding out as the car vibrates, hits bumps, etc. The most likely place for this to be happening is in the door. Removing the interior door panel is easy (look here: http://www.homestead.com/volvo2/elecdoor2.html)

But first:

By removing the Black felt panel above the driver's knees and looking up in there you'll see Red, Black, and Green wires joined to their mates coming from the relays, in a white nylon connector. Pull this connector apart and replace fuse No.8 (Central locks, clock, interior light, trunk light...). You have disconnected the door switches and wires' path to the relays...if you no longer have the intermittent clicking and dying battery, this confirms the short-to-ground problem is in the door or hinge area.

Now remove the door panel and thoroughly inspect the lock wiring for rubbed-through insulation, cracks, etc. You are searching for that trio of wires which may all be encased in a black plastic sleeve for most of their length. These come from a connector in the door, through the rubber bellows at the hinge edge of the door, and into the car interior.

Let us know what you find - that's how we all learn.
