Manual Transmission / Clutch Questions 200 1991

I have recently joined the "200 Nation" and have a few questions regarding the manual transmission.

When in neutral at rest, whenever engaging a forward gear there is some resistance. Whenever engaging reverse, there is grinding. Even if at a complete stop and I first engage a forward gear to "stop" everything from spinning, then keep holding down the clutch and then engage reverse, there is slight grinding (as things begin to spin again as soon as back in neutral).

I have never done a transmission rebuild, but it seems that the input shaft will begin turning even with the clutch fulled pressed in. The forward gears are not grinding due to the syncro'd gears, but reverse of course has no synchro.

What is going on here? Is there some easy answer? Is it clutch related (it is unable to fully disengage the flywheel), or transmission related? When in gear and press in the clutch on a slight incline, the car will roll backward, so it doesn't seem to be that). When the clutch is fully depressed, what is "connecting" the flywheel and the transmission to cause the transmission to start to rotate? I will do some more reading in the Bentley to get a general understanding, but suffice to say I think I have something going on.
