bypass ECU for timing? 700

i have a 1989 740 GL (B230F) and i cant figure out why i am getting 5 degrees BTDC instead of 12.
i went into a well known shop and asked them to look it up in their computer. it said that i should disconnect the "ECU vaccumm line" and then twist the distributer untill i get 12 degrees. does this make sense? they said that the timing must be so far out of range that the ECU is making it 5 degrees instead of 12. is there really a vaccumm line that goes to the ECU? if so where is it under the hood? (the hose on the center of the intake that goes through the dash, right) does it really go to the ecu or does it go somewhere else inside the car?

sorry this is a long post, with a lot of questins, but i'm very confused!

thanks in advance!
