Rear Cylinder head oil plug 200 1985

Need to replace oil plug at rear cylinder head (just below valve cover) on B230F engine. NA 1985 245. The plug is cheap but do I need to install it from inside (ie. remove valve cover gasket) or can I slip it between the firewall and back of engine and install it from the outside? Also any pros and cons on using retention plate as offered on IPD or which could be self fabricated. I guess I am wondering if this plug is indeed a "safety valve" to protect engine seals against high crankcase pressures.

Thanks
